Free Public Domain Sheet Music

Band Instruments

Live Sound

All published sheet music before 1923 is in the public domain, and is free to use however you like with no permission needed by the publisher.

We are compiling a link list to all of the best websites that provide free sheet music in the public domain.  We strive to only include sites that are truly free, and do not require payment, but some sites may get on the list because they offer both free and paid sheet music or they offer other useful downloads.

Classical Scores:

Project Gutenberg volunteers have been engaging in digitizing public domain sheet music, using a variety of techniques, to enable study and performance.

The Loeb Music Library, using the systems and services for image digitization developed by the Harvard University Library's (HUL) Library Digital Initiative, is creating an expansible resource of scanned images of rare and unique musical scores that will be freely available via the Web for classroom and research use at Harvard and to scholars all over the world.

The Choral Public Domain Library was begun in December 1998, CPDL is one of the world's largest free sheet music sites. You can use CPDL to find scores, texts, translations, and information about composers. This site can be a little tricky to navigate, but look for the PDF file link on the page to get to the sheet music.

Welcome to the Mutopia Project ... a place where music is free for everyone! Download it, print it out, and share it. Mutopia is similar in spirit to Project Gutenberg, but consists of free sheet music.

The Classical Archives is the largest classical music site on the web:
35,308 full length classical music files by 1,922 composers. This site does not have sheet music, but it is a great source for classical recordings available for a small membership fee.

Free sheet music downloads - staff paper - music teacher resources.

American Folk:

This project provides web access, through digital scanning and descriptive indexing, to a unique collection of rare American music material in the UNC-Chapel Hill Music Library.

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music is part of Special Collections at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library of The Johns Hopkins University. It contains over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960. All pieces of the collection are indexed on this site and a search will retrieve a catalog description of the pieces. An image of the cover and each page of music will also be retrieved if the music was published before 1923 and is in the public domain.
