All published sheet music before 1923 is in the public domain, and is free to use however you like with no permission needed by the publisher. We are compiling a link list to all of the best websites that provide free sheet music in the public domain. We strive to only include sites that are truly free, and do not require payment, but some sites may get on the list because they offer both free and paid sheet music or they offer other useful downloads. Classical Scores:
Project Gutenberg volunteers have been engaging in digitizing public domain sheet music, using a variety of techniques, to enable study and performance. http://www.gutenberg.org/music
The Loeb Music Library, using the systems and services for image digitization developed by the Harvard University Library's (HUL) Library Digital Initiative, is creating an expansible resource of scanned images of rare and unique musical scores that will be freely available via the Web for classroom and research use at Harvard and to scholars all over the world. http://hcl.harvard.edu/libraries/loebmusic/collections/digital.html
The Choral Public Domain Library was begun in December 1998, CPDL is one of the world's largest free sheet music sites. You can use CPDL to find scores, texts, translations, and information about composers. This site can be a little tricky to navigate, but look for the PDF file link on the page to get to the sheet music. http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
